According to the latest data from Shrimp Insights, the global shrimp import market has only increased by 1% compared to 2019 at the end of August, 2020.

1. The quantity of shrimp imported by China declined in July and August

After the Covid-19 was found in shrimp packaging from Ecuador, China’s shrimp imports in July and August fell by 30% comparing from last year. Although shrimp imports in the U.S. market increased by 15% after the recovery of the massive retail industry, this was not enough to offset the decline in Chinese demand. As a result, the total imports of the entire EU, the United States and China in July and August fell by 6% from last year.

2. The United States has become the world's best-selling country for shrimp

In August 2020, U.S. shrimp imports reached 82,411 tons, valued at more than US$701 million. Compared with the same period in 2019, both volume and value increased by 17%. According to data from the United States Department of Agriculture (FAS.USDA), in the first eight months of this year, U.S. shrimp imports amounted to 460,576 tons, valued at 3.9 billion US dollars; compared with the same period last year, the value increased by 7% and the sales volume increased by 6%.

In the first eight months of this year, the eight largest shrimp suppliers in the United States were India, Indonesia, Ecuador, Vietnam, Thailand, Mexico, Argentina and China.

3. Indonesia, Ecuador and Argentina have the fastest export growth

In the first eight months of this year, Indonesia, Ecuador and Argentina were the countries with the fastest growth in shrimp exports to the United States. Indonesia’s market share increased from 19% in 2019 to 23% in 2020. Ecuador’s share of the US market has increased from 13% to 17%. Argentina's market share increased from 21% to 23%. India’s market share dropped from 39% in the first eight months of 2019 to 36% in the first eight months of this year.

In the first eight months of this year, shrimp imports from Indonesia to the United States have been achieving high and steady growth. Although Indonesia is also facing difficulties due to the Covid-19 epidemic, as the number of Covid-19 infections and deaths in the country continues to increase. In the context of rampant diseases, the resilience of the Indonesian shrimp industry and the ability to maintain stable production are very good. This is the main competitor of many countries in the US market. According to data from FAS.USDA, in the first eight months of this year, shrimp imports from Indonesia to the United States reached 104,764 tons, valued at 987 million U.S. dollars, a 24% increase in volume and 28% in value compared to the same period in 2019.

Ecuador’s share of the US market has increased due to a sharp decline in shrimp exports to China. In the first eight months of this year, due to China's discovery of the coronavirus on Ecuadorian shrimp packaging, the image of Ecuadorian shrimp in China has been greatly reduced. Therefore, Ecuador has turned to promote exports to the United States and the European Union. But currently, Ecuador is resuming shrimp exports to China, so it is expected that Ecuador's shrimp exports to the United States will slow down in the last few months of this year. In the first eight months of this year, shrimp imports from Ecuador to the United States reached 79,172 tons, valued at US$485.3 million. Compared with the same period last year, the quantity increased by 40% and the value increased by 30%.

Due to the Covid-19 epidemic, Indian shrimp's market share in the US market declined in the first 8 months of this year, which severely affected the production, transportation, supply and price of Indian shrimp. At present, in terms of the number of people infected with Covid-19, India is the second largest country in the world after the United States, and it will take some time to resume strong exports to the US market. In the first eight months of this year, shrimp imported from India to the United States reached 167,821 tons, valued at US$1.4 billion, a decrease of 2% in quantity, but a 2% increase in value over the same period last year.

Among the total shrimp products imported into the United States, frozen processed shrimp (HS code 1605211030) grew the fastest in the first eight months of this year, reaching 64,629 tons, valued at more than $654 million, an increase of 29%. The volume and value increased by 30% over the same period last year. This product ranks second in the total shrimp products imported to the United States, accounting for 14% of the total. India, Vietnam and Indonesia are the largest sources of shrimp products in the United States. Shrimp products from India, Vietnam, Indonesia to the United States (HS code 1605211030) increased by 60%, 26% and 21% respectively over the same period last year.

4. The future holiday demand will be great

U.S. shrimp import demand in the first eight months of this year was affected by the Covid-19 epidemic, but the demand for shrimp imports in retail and supermarkets remains high. It is expected that the demand for U.S. shrimp imports will continue to increase in the last few months of this year to meet the demand for year-end holidays.

According to data from Vietnam Customs, the United States is the main market for Vietnamese shrimp imports, accounting for nearly 24%. Compared with September 2019, Vietnam’s shrimp exports to the United States increased by 39.6% in the first nine months of 2020. In the first nine months of this year, the value of shrimp exports to this market exceeded US$634.4 million, an increase of 33% over the same period last year. Despite the emergence of Covid-19, Vietnam’s shrimp exports to the US remained positive in the first nine months of this year. The United States is considered to be the most stable market for imported Vietnamese shrimp in the first nine months of this year.
